ARTIST’S BIOGRAPHY

LIVE ARTIST/ILLUSTRATOR/ PRODUCTION DESIGNER/SCRIPTWRITER/ CREATIVE CONSULTANT

Josh has been working in Production design and management - for site specific theatre, events and film, since graduating from University of Brighton in 2002, from the Theatre with Visual Arts course.

With a skill base in narrative design. Josh uses illustration, 3D workshop skills, and scriptwriting practice to create graphic visualisations, scripts, storyboards, props, costume, character and set design for any given project.

He can take the details of any project and work them coherently through the fabric of the larger concept, with subtlety and holistic vision. Quirky humour and good old-fashioned entertainment also play a feature in his work. His client base ranges from public commission conceptual art groups, such as Artangel, Home, Wild Gift, to community theatre (Eudemonic, Ladder To The Moon, Cardboard Citizens) to, club cabarets and festivals (Whoopee, The Secret Garden Party, Future Cinema), to short film and music promo production (RSA films, MJZ Ltd., Group Captain Films). Josh is always keen to work with groups who are keen to push boundaries, and passionate about the values in their work, and how to bring them into the public sphere.

As an artist Josh Knowles makes work, which revolves around themes of globalism, the power of journeys, the seductive nature of objects, and the act of objectification. He is drawn to using classical metaphors for the human condition and carnivalesque imagery to explore his themes. His interest in objects and objectification resonate as socio-political commentaries on the using of totems in the ‘artifice of society’. His predominant medium is performance installation, but he also makes sculpture, and the occasional comic book.
